The Makowiska Project: Tak trzeba

The old Lutheran cemetery at Makowiska is subject of a Restoration project.

It is an initiative of local people from the area of Czernikowo.

The project they have set up has a professional approach which could inspire and guide other people in creating similar projects.

The name of the project is: Tak trzeba - We should. It is organized by Czyż nie, an association for supporting education, culture and sport in Czernikowo. Usually this organization works for local society, prepares training for unemployed etc.

Next actions
22 - 28 September 2008	Basis Restoration of the cemetery in Makowiska. The goal is to put the cemetery in a condition in which the maintenance can be taken over by the local school. Volunteers needed to support the renovation activities! Interested? Then please have a look at the project's website or contact Anna Zglińska at zglinka@wp.pl . During the time of the work at the cemetery people from the university at Toruń will make a survey among local people of Makowiska to find out to which degree people are conscious about the cemetery.
25 - 26 October 2008	Official ceremony of adoption of the cemetery in Makowiska by the school in Makowiska.
ongoing	The project team is planing to organize an exhibition about the renovation of this cemetery, about the history of Makowiska and related issues. On this behalf they are looking for people who live or lived in Makowiska and who could provide old pictures or stories of Makowiska.

What already has been done

The local interest groups, such as representatives of the community, the school and the Evangelical church, were contacted and have signaled a positive opinion about the project.

A web site has been prepared for the project to inform about the project and to make the activities more transparent: Tak trzeba.

The project team has been successful in raising funds for the project from the Kujavia and Pomerania marshal office and from the Rural Development Foundation.

The project team is in contact with the Office for Protection of Historical Monuments in Toruń. They are considering their professional opinion and advises for the renovation.

For the cemetery of Makowiska there already existed documentation cards prepared and kept at the Wojewódzki Urząd Ochrony Zabytków in Toruń in the Regionalny Ośrodek Dokumentacji Zabytków.

The documentation cards for Makowisko had been created many years ago by professor Jan Pakulski and professor Andrzej Mietz.

As a part of the Renovation project these documentation cards for Makowiska had been updated.

Part of the professional documentation of the current condition of the cemetery is a detailed plan of the cemetery. It shows the location of the graves, the location and type of relevant vegetation and the angle in which the photos were taken.
